Pope Benedict XVI Accepts Bishop Gumbleton's Resignation

Auxiliary Archbishop of Detroit, Thomas J. Gumbleton announced on January 26th, his 76th birthday that he would be resigning from his post. Pope Benedict XVI has accepted his resignation on the basis of his age. He was ordained a bishop in 1968 at the age of 38, becoming the youngest Catholic bishop in the country. Bishop Gumbleton was renound worlwide for his work in promoting peace and justice. He is the co-founder of the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights. In 1972 he became the founding president of Pax Christi USA a post which he filled until 1991. From 1976-1984 Bishop Gumbleton was President of Bread for the World. He has served on the boards of the MK Gahdi Institute for Nonviolence, New Ways Ministry, Witness for Peace, and Fellowship of Reconcilliation. Bishop Gumbleton is a respected speaker and writer on the issues of social justice and his column appears regularly in the National Catholic Reporter.
