Will your name be among those demanding an end to immigration detention for profit?

Tomorrow night hundreds of concerned New Jersey residents are expected to participate in an "Occupy the Freeholders" action. At the Essex County Freeholders regularly scheduled meeting we will deliver a petition started on Change.org that has garnered more that 3,000 signatures on-line and over 1000 in hard copy in opposition to an expanded contract with a local jail that houses immigrant detainees for profit.

Will your name be among those who demand an end to the incarceration of immigrants for profit?

If you haven't already, please sign this petition to revoke the ICE contract in Essex County

And then join us in Newark...

Kathy,

Just a thought. I work for an immigration law firm. One bad side effect if you are successful is local detainees will be moved out of state. When a detention center gets full, the US government will place them in facilities that have room. Sometimes these facilities are in New Mexico or out of state. When that happens, the families and the attorneys can not see or easily communicate with the detainees.

If you really want to help the people that are being put in these detention centers,my advise is to talk to the president and have him and his administration change what they are doing on the ground. The number of beds needed locally has to do with the national policy from the president. Change that and you will reduce the necessity for the county jail to make beds available for detainees.

The president promised to only pick up immigrants that are criminals, I have not seen that happening as of yet. Over the past 3 years ICE has picked up more immigrants than in past years. It has become so bad in the court that the docket has been pushed out over a year between appearances here in NJ.

In the long term, the federal government will build new facilities in the state if the state does not help house these people. This will cause all of us to have increased taxes since the counties will not be able to "save" tax dollars by using existing underutilized facilities. We will all have to pay for the construction and maintenance of the federal detention centers that will be constructed.

Also the increase in newarks property taxes has to do with the portion that is either from the school system or from the city part of the taxes, not the county (since the county had a flat budget and there was no increase on their portion of the newark property taxes)

I understand the sentiment, but I guess I don't understand the real goal here with the petition.

Good Luck,

Rob
